To mark the Day of the Bulgarian Alphabet and Culture on May 24, and to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Bulgar(i)en in Hannover e.V., I created a special series of handmade ceramic magnets.
Each piece features the first three letters of the Cyrillic alphabet – А, Б, and В – glazed in the colours of the Bulgarian flag: white, green, and red. These letters are more than just symbols – they carry deep meaning, representing identity, heritage, and connection.
The process began with a hand-carved linocut, which I used to imprint the reversed image into clay. After the first firing, I carefully glazed each element and returned them to the kiln, letting the colours come to life.
This project is especially close to my heart. As an artist and a Bulgarian living abroad, it was a joy to craft this tribute with my own hands – to blend tradition, colour, and craftsmanship into something small yet meaningful. The proceeds from the magnets will help support the activities of the Bulgarian association in Hannover, a community that has grown stronger and warmer over the past ten years.
